Soon after the confirmation of
his victory in the latest US presidential elections Obama tweeted as “four more
years” and entire media re-flashed it all across the globe. But that was an
incomplete tweet which missed the ending tag phrase “to go green”.
US has to go green massively because
it is 30 per cent ahead of world’s total CO2 emissions. It is the biggest
threat to climate change and global warming the sole cause of the erratic weather.
No any climate expert has so far unequivocally denied the excessive CO2
emissions as one of the causes of the hurricane Sandy. It shows that our
irresponsible acts against environment lash back on us in the shape of natural
disasters.
It was Sandy which made him
elected for the second term to be the most powerful person of the world. Before
this super storm Americans were divided over the issue of green versus black
energy. A huge number of Americans believing in consumerism were of the view
that energy needs must be fulfilled through whatever type. They still hold the
view of clean coal technology that is not a trustworthy way to extract energy
according to majority of the environmentalists.
Obama hit the election campaign
with his pledge for the green fuel that is not only environmental friendly but
also relatively cheap if its production is carried to the economies of scale
with more focus on it. However, he was cautious to make huge pledges for going
green because his previous tenure was not admirable on this score.
His team earlier failed to
develop a comprehensive plan to combat climate change. It also did not take on
board all the stakeholders in climate change debate and American public was not
welcome at every stage of green policy making. However, after super storm Sandy
was over, all pinned hopes on huge efforts to go green in energy sector.
Obama and his team should not have
to wait for any other eye-opening incident and put aside the pressure of the cartels
of the black energy. They people are playing tricks with Mother Nature just for
the few bucks as profit. In the long term green energy is more profitable than
the black one. But unfortunately most of the people think in short term especially
if it is a matter of monetary gains.
Legislation is the only way out
to restrict the act of polluting, either it is direct or indirect. In its
second term Obama government has to introduce stringent laws and regulations to
make entire technology go green for the cause of more sustainable development.
This would help reduce pressure on climate and ultimately Americans would not
be facing natural havocs in future.
