Climate change issue in 2012 remains hot

climate change issue remains hot in 2012
Climate change issue has been so hot in 2012 but no any headway was made with regard to its solution. As a result climate change seems to be more intense in coming year. Obviously efforts were made at the global level but most of them confined to the debate just for the sake of the debate. It is the nature of the global community to conclude the issues of apparently urgent nature and remain philosophical over the most vital long-term issues. Most of the advanced nations are very much worried over the war against terrorism but they don’t think it urgent to fret over environmental terrorism that is equally rampant all over the world.

Natural disasters and climate change issue in 2012

Series of the natural disasters all around the world were enough to open the eyes of the green demagogues globally but this issue was also entangled in several ifs and buts. Most of them defended that natural disasters have been lashing the world since the very beginning therefore these should not be linked with the issue of the global warming that emerged just a century ago. Arch supporters of the green peace however, contended that magnitude and frequency of the natural calamities rose to an alarming level because of the menace of the climate change. But green demagogues turned a deaf year over their arguments.

US election and climate change issue in 2012

Strangely enough the presidential election campaign of the sole super power of the world also focused the issue of the climate change in 2012. Both the contenders made lofty green promises. But after the election that too just after one of the biggest natural catastrophe super storm Sandy, newly elected president moved his direction towards fiscal cliff keeping the climate issue at the back burner. He might have considered his environmental mentors competent enough to resolve this issue with proper policy making. Had it been so Obama would not have used the climate issue as his election slogan and would have done it in his first term?

Doha talks and climate change issue in 2012

World leaders with a lot of pain for the rising level of the global emissions joined their heads in Doha in November with lot of fanfare but failed to come out with consensus roadmap to extend and rationalize the most trumpeted Kyoto protocol to reduce the global emissions to the minimum possible level till 2020. They all differed over the targets of emission reductions and most of them also had different viewpoint regarding the timeframe to achieve these targets. They succeeded in their covert objective of shifting the climate change debate in year 2013 to buy more time if any stringent targets are decided accordingly. The only success  achieved in Doha talks was decision to stress the rich nations to compensate the losses suffered by the poor nations because of the rise in climate change done by the former.

Civil society and climate change issue in 2012

Civil society and media in western world remained so vocal to fight for the cause of the climate change in 2012 but affluent world remained occupied in solving their all-pervasive financial crises. Therefore, any pressure of huge nature could not be built up to force their policy makers to take any big step for the reduction of carbon emissions. The status of the least developed and backward countries is equally bleak as they are always dependent on global donors and foreign aid to ensure smooth functioning of their system for basic necessities. Environmental care and climate change remained in low priority in such countries and would remain so in years to come.

Conclusion

Despite this gloomy green scenario at the global level hopes of improvement are still there. At least efforts are being made to come out with some proper green solution for the issue of the rising level of carbon emissions by the whole world. Meanwhile media and civil society continue to raise their voice to save our planet Earth from the further miseries of the climate change. Hence hope is the only positive aspect to let us work more to bring all of us on same page to save this planet Earth which is the only one we have to continue our physical survival.
